Franz Ritter was a student of J. Praetorius at the University of Altdorf and served as a minister in Stöckelsheim. He died after 1640. He wrote several astronomic works, among which a book about the working and construction of an astrolabe (Zinner 4437), and the accompanying second part about the use of this instrument (Zinner 4438). The work received pralse for its lucid exposition. Both parts were published separately in Nuremberg in 1613 by B. Caymox, who also made the twenty-one copper engravings in the first part and the fifteen folded engravings at the end of the second part (Zinner).
